Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church Development Commission

Water and sanitation - Providing clean water through boreholes, protected springs and gravity schemes; training water committees and technicians to maintain water sources; training in preventative healthcare, sanitation and hygiene; training in latrine construction and maintenance. The support of manual drilling as a component of the programme has been ongoing since 2014.

Food security - People from the poor section of society are encouraged to form local Self Help Groups. The groups are supported through facilitators to develop their own vision, by-laws and chose their relevant activities. Through weekly meetings and weekly savings, people learn to know each other, and build up also a common fund. As time goes on, the group can start giving loans to its members. Training is also available on topics like conservation farming, Disaster Risk Reduction, Income Generating Activities.New hope is born, and more activities that help people to get out of food insecurity through new livelihoods.

This programme is implemented by the training department in rural areas (Gilgal programme) and by the Integrated Urban Development Department (IUDD) in more urban settings.

This programme is supported through the partnership with the Dutch government on chronic crisis situations.

Through weekly meetings and weekly savings, people learn to know each other, and also build up a common fund. As time goes on, the group can start giving loans to its members. Training is also available on topics like conservation farming, Disaster Risk Reduction, Income Generating Activities. In Wolayta especially the work on conservation farming has grown strongly over the last years, with more than 1200 farmers taking part in it through contact farmers in their neighbourhood.
